Sydney-siders will know that the future of the Swiss Grand Hotel Bondi Beach is a little uncertain at the moment: developers want to soften the famous "wedding cake facade" and turn the interior into a combination (smaller) boutique hotel and residential apartments. But since the council hasn't decided yet, any change is a long way off.

Just the same, there's been a flood of journos reviewing the Swiss Grand, which perhaps hopes to remind people you can still stay there. A recent Sydney Morning Herald review spoke of all the good sides to the Swiss Grand, the best of which is of course the view over Bondi Beach.

In other respects, the Swiss Grand is a fairly average place, without overly stunning décor or any particular claim to fame. But when location is key it's a great spot to hang by the beach, and they have some really cheap deals for advancing bookings.

For example, during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, a great sunny time to have a hotel room over Bondi, they still have some Junior Suites available for just A$119 (US$99).

We think it's definitely worth a night or two at that rate before the Bondi Beach landmark changes forever.

are there any good hotels over Bondi Beach? that was what disappointed me most about the place. it didn't look like there was anywhere nice (not sandy) to stay in.

There's a smaller hotel nearby but also pretty average - I was surprised too because it seems such an obvious place to have a great hotel. I'm heading over to Syd again at Christmas though and checking out Bondi again (mid-summer) is high on my agenda.
