Look, we're not ones to take the word of TripAdvisor reviewers as gospel -- especially since we understand that sometimes folks won't really take the time to write about a hotel on the Internet unless their experiences at said hotel are exceptionally miserable or fantastic.

Nonetheless, we like to consult TA when hotels are in their first days of operation because we like to get a 'lil peek at what folks are saying about it (especially if we haven't had a chance to check the place out ourselves). So we did our usual TA-spying on the brand new InterContinental Chicago O'Hare and it looks like the hotel got off to a bit of a rocky start during the soft opening at the beginning of the month, but everything seems to be going a bit more smoothly now.

User symantix, who stayed at the IC during its soft-opening stage, declared the hotel to have "more kinks than a chiropractic convention" (heh) and added:

My room had a plethora of issues, including:
1. No internet (wired or wireless)
2. Various bugs in the TV operating system
3. A doorless rain-style shower that succeeded in drenching the entire bathroom floor because of its poor design
4. No bathrobes
5. No Minibar
6. 1 of the 2 phones was defective

The staff is a mixed bag. I encountered several people who clearly had little to no hospitality experience or willingness to please and they quite simply have no business working at a "4-star" property. Sadly, many of these uncaring employees work the front of the house.

No internet?! Oh hells no!

SteinVierrader, who stayed at the hotel on their first two nights after the official grand opening, said "the people make the difference:"

It was raining hard when we arrived, but we were met at the door with umbrellas & helpful people. We were quickly taken care of and off to our beautiful room in no time at all. That was surprising as we were there 2 hours early for check in. The room was well appointed and everything was in place... another surprise. I expected to have MOST everything there but, expected a missing iron or hair dryer or something.... Nope! O.K. there was one problem: the mini-bar wasn't stocked. That really didn't cause any problems, however.

So: B.Y.O.Booze just to be safe; and call to check on the Internet situation if it means as much to you as it does to us.

Hotels may differ from country to country indeed. However, every hotel, no matter big or mini should meet the necessary requirements.

Both service and environment should be top notch

Besides, I think both service and environment in a hotel should be top notch to satisfy even capricious people.
