If you're reading this, chances are pretty high you're not in Munich, the world's holiest of Oktoberfest meccas (but by all means, correct us in the comments if we're mistaken). Because if you were in Munich, we hope you'd be perfecting your beer stein-pounding or last-minute Dirndl shopping for Saturday, when the festivities get underway.

But for the rest of us beer-lovin' brethren, Middle America has an incredible alternative: Frankenmuth, Michigan, the first German Parliament-sanctioned Oktoberfest location outside of Munich. "Little Bavaria" holds its annual fest today through Sept. 21.

From the best we can tell, the family-owned Bavarian Inn Lodge is the veritable top dawg of Frankenmuth Oktoberfest hotels. The closest hotel to Heritage Park, where the revelry takes place, Bavarian Inn balances convenience and comfort with an overly generous dose of kitsch and kid activities. We're talking what very well could be the world's only Bavarian-themed mini golf course, a huge indoor water park, an authentic Bavarian glockenspiel and handcrafted covered bridge, hands-on pretzel rolling demos, and a nightly German sing-along in the hotel lounge (OK, we admit that last perk could get a little dicey).

Availability is predictably spotty for the days spanning Oktoberfest, but when we checked, rates for tonight started around $145 for a standard room with a view of the Cass River.

Wow Katie - Thanks for the Plug!  I'm replying from the Bavarian Inn Lodge as the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager.  Found your post - thanks to google alerts!

YES - we still have about a dozen rooms left for both Friday and Saturday nights of Oktoberfest!  It has always been a lot of fun, being in the heart of downtown and next to all the action of all of our festivals.  Thank you for the kind words about your experiences here.

Hope you will look me up when next in town!
