HotelChatter's Guide to Toiletries :: The Big Players

September 10, 2008 at 4:24 PM | by juliana | 17 Comments

We're passionate about Hotel Toiletries. So passionate, in fact, that we believe a particularly bad toiletry offering can serve to ruin an entire hotel experience. With endless new carry-on baggage regulations and luggage weight limits severely restricting our travel-toiletry options, we've become more and more dependent on hotels' grooming-product selections (or lack thereof) to use both during our stay and to swipe for use on our next trip.

We've run into our fair share of problems: penny-saving 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioners that render any sort of hairstyle hopeless. Lack of face wash. Soap that smells like baby wipes. Bottles of "lotion" that leave us feeling greasy. And the thought of sharing a single bar of soap with someone else sometimes leaves us feeling queasy.

While we realize (and hope) that nobody selects a hotel based exclusively on the toiletries they carry, we've compiled a list of which hotels carry what kind of toiletries for you to consult before you decide to pack the bottles of conditioner from your home shower.

Today, we're starting off with the big hotel brands and we'll do other hotels in the future. Just remember, this is a working list of toiletries and we'll do our best to keep it updated. Help us out if you want!

    I. Hate. Shampoo/Conditioner 2 in 1. I hate it. Hate. It. I first experienced it at a Holiday Inn and have been passionate about this ever since -- and I don't think my hair will ever be the same.

actually i stayed at a wyndham and they had very cute bath and body works toiletries from the true blue spa line. there was "grin and bare it" for the body lotion and "cover and protect yourself" for the shower cap. "wash your mouth" out was for, duh, mouthwash. it was kind of a bliss knock-off but i liked it.

    Florida

The Hyatt Coconut Point in Naples where I just was had some bangin' Eucalyptus products. Smelled great and the portions were generous. Yes, I brought some home.

When we made the uwishunu room at the Westin Philadelphia, we had a local apothecary, Duross and Langel, make limited edition room soaps. THEY were awesome.

Some Vegas Hotesl and a Brand thats not that Fancy

MGM Grand Skylofts and the Mansion both have Bvlgari, Wynn and Bellagio and Venetian have own brand, Wynns is very good, Bellagio - Not so much, Venetian - its very Orange.

The Brand that amuses me is Gilchrist and Soames, sometimes seen in "Upmarket", admittedly the name conjures up images of some Bespoke Store in London on Regent Street, but in fact they are based in Peterborough, UK, trust me - not quite so Glamorous

    Gansevoort South

Just stayed at the Gansevoort South and they have the most dreamy "Cutler" products that are developed by Rodney Cutler of Cutler Salon of NYC and soon to be open in...............MIAMI!  Imagine that!  And in the shops at the Gansevoort South!  What an amazing coincidence!  But I'm no hater.......these products ROCK!  And you can buy them on Amazon!

My complaint with hotel products is that they don't seem to "perform" as well @ home as they do at the actual property.  Oddly enough these worked even in my uber hard water.

    Two enthusiatic thumbs up!

    Hotel toiletries

The Viceroy in Palm Spring s and Santa Monica stock Aromatherapy Associates , great product and fantastic EO blends.

Flatotel in NYC stocks Essentiel Elements Rosemary and this really wakes me up after a late night.

The Hotel at mandalay Bay has a great own label called Bathe which smell great.

    Hotel Toiletries

Many hotels use Molton Brown , which used to be much better. The latest MB hair conditioner I used at Inn at Perry Cabin made my hair like straw. They seem to be watered down products now. The bar soap is nice though.

    Best--The Carlyle, NYC,
Kielhls--loved all of it, especially the hand lotion that has a nice citrus scent.

    Asprey Purple Water

... is also available at the Connaught Hotel in London. It's nice, but there are better ones. As for buying it, oddly enough, the whole product range is available at amazon.com :-)
