Andre Balazs' Sunset Beach :: Food, Good. Rooms, Not So Much.
Sure, it was a long weekend, full of hurricanes and scandals and blue skies...and journos checking out the allegedly French-style digs on Shelter Island at Andre Balazs's Sunset Beach.
We're pleased to hear that the hotel's food is to die for -- a rave review of the Sunset Beach menu recommends the bouillabaisse and the moule frites, two classic French dishes, bien sur. The writer notes, "With a little help from the Frenchies at the next table, you could almost make believe you're in St. Tropez admiring the Mediterranean."
Interestingly, the writer failed to mention the hotelier's Reserve Sunset Beach Rose.
The terrific food is a plus, but the rooms apparently leave much to be desired.
Bizarrely, for a purported "beach hotel" with rates that begin at $245, the digs are across a two-line highway from the water.
And Tripadvisor reviews are, generally speaking, not too thrilled with the place. Some reviewers were left with the idea that Balazs bought an old, small, terribly outdated resort, slapped his name on it, and hyped it up. Others enjoyed it, but overall the reviews weigh toward the negative right now.
If you want to have dinner with Andre, hurry -- the hotel and restaurant officially shutter for the winter September 28. That should give him plenty of time during the snowy months to give as much attention to the hotel as he does to the menu and the vino.
