What Women Really Want...In a Hotel

Occasionally when we shack up in a hotel and are confronted with gaudy brocade galore or minimalism a la copious black leather, we find ourself thinking...."whoa, we are totally not in the demographic this place had in mind."

Feeling this way in a space which is to be a temporary home is more than uncomfortable, it can be downright stunting.

To address this issue among women travelers, the Cologne International School of Design did a very awesome thing by conducting a study to discover what is needed to create a "new hotel culture" which successfully melds the design demands of both sexes.

Via questionnaires from international business travelers and women traveling alone, a survey of European hotel managers, interviews with female and male designers, and even a hidden observation of "behaviours of female hotel guests in various hotels and hotel areas suchs as bar, lobby, or breakfast room," the German researchers have concluded that women desire three things with their mint on the pillow:

  •  Sociability - being personally addressed by staff, for example
  •  Sensuousness - Originally we thought this meant that the Thompson LES may be selling a few more of those $195 Kiki de Montparnasse kits than they planned, but of course it refers back to good design (especially in the bathroom)
  •  Security - as in reliability, location and orientation.

Hear that? It's the sound of a revolution; you can't win us over with just Fresh toiletries and Frette robes anymore! Expect a full-fledged book on this to emerge later this year, and we seriously want to read it.
