The locals reportedly have several issues with the place.
Reason one: the place gets so many clubby visitors on the weekends that guests are illegally parking in the streets and pissing off locals.
Reason two: Montauk is all about the anti-Hamptons vibe, and the Surf Lodge has been a celeb magnet and locals are afraid the whole place is going to turn into another snooty Hamptons-esque destination.
Once we heard this, we imagined a mob gathered outside the hotel waiting with torches screaming, Kill the beast." But that's just our overactive imagination.
We got word from a hotel rep who assured us that there were no protests by locals going on outside the hotel nor are guests being harassed for patronizing the hotel.
Now, a question for the locals: Um. This is the Hamptons, no? Didn't you kind of see this coming when the Surf Lodge was announced? And it was being brought to you by the partners in the Cain nightclub brand?
Sigh. Maybe the Montauk Monster wasn't a monster at all, but a DRAMA LLAMA sent to Montauk to warn everyone about this whole mess.
