This morning the BBC reported being invited into the Golden Palace by a Tibetan activist, and it was all very James Bond: turn right after entering the hotel, find a man with a red cap, and so it went on.
The journos ending up in a fifth floor room of the hotel watching a video of Tibetans talking about freedom--unfortunately they decided the hotel room was "small, hot and dark".
The Golden Palace Silver Street Hotel is a Chinese hotel rather than a Western-style luxury place, which means two main things: it's cheaper, but it's harder to communicate with staff unless you have some basic Mandarin knowledge.
It's only been open since 2004 and outside of Olympic season rooms go for around US$60, but during August they're up to $220 instead. Just watch out for that guy with the red cap.
