The 2008 Olympics will open in Beijing on Friday and for what seems like the first time in the history of sporting events, there is actually little to no problems in reserving a hotel room.

While it's no longer news that Beijing is having a tough time securing visitors and hotel guests and that the expected demand for hotel rooms fell way short of expectations, the hotel rates are still dropping as the opening gets closer.

Reuters reports:

Asked on Monday whether they could take a 10-room booking for the coming weekend, including the night of the much-hyped opening ceremony, a series of four- and three-star hotels said they had plenty of availability and were willing to give big discounts.

Some of the hotels willing to discount include the Bamboo Garden Hotel and the Oriental Peace Hotel. The prices offered ranged from about $150 to $215 a night.

Of course, the Beijing tourism department is not worried as they claim that these hotels are catering mostly to Chinese tourists who don't book hotel rooms until the very last minute.

Things are in better shape for the luxury hotels. For instance, the Sofitel Wanda said it did not have a single room free throughout the Olympics. So the Beijing Olympic hotel scene is not a total dud.
