The Dennis Hotel: Under renovations this summer.

Once upon a time (1920) in a land far, far away (Atlantic City, NJ) the Dennis Hotel was a beautiful historic hotel located right on the boardwalk. In fact, it was one of the original Atlantic City resorts!

Then one day (in 1979), this big, big company came along (Bally's) and built a casino around the hotel, surrounding its beauty and history with slots and poker tables while guests stayed in the hotel without realizing where they were.

Then (present-day), after its owners finally realized what an asset they were hiding, it was decided to renovate the former Dennis Hotel and bring it back to its glory.

Harrah's Entertainment, the owners of Bally's Atlantic City just finished $60 million dollar renovation of the Dennis Hotel which included a full renovation of the rooms and its exterior.

Then as part of the renovation, Harrah's knocked down the gaudy retail strip that blocked the hotel and it's majestic courtyard from being seen from the boardwalk.

The sad part of this story is even though this might become a draw to those looking for a nostalgic stay in Atlantic City, Bally's does not differentiate the rooms in the Dennis hotel from everything else on their online reservations site. And from what we've heard, the rooms don't look all that different from the rest of the hotel either.

To think: Bally's could actually charge high rates for this type of accommodation! But at least we can now see a bit of the former glory of Atlantic City - even though it was really there the whole time!
