Le Meridien in Arizona So Not Happening Now

August 28, 2008 at 4:00 PM | 0 Comments

In one of the odder news stories about new hotels, the Hayden Ferry Lakeside development in Tempe, Ariz., which was to include condos, a hotel, retail and office space, has told Starwood's Le Meridien to take a hike.

The Valhalla Development Group, the developers of the project, are ready to have a groundbreaking in December, but Le Meridien isn't ready to commit to the project yet - so the developers decided to go with another 4-star hotel brand which has not yet been announced.

The project was announced in August 2006 as the first new-build Le Meridien in America since Starwood took over the brand earlier that year, but because of the breakdown in condo units and hotel rooms, Le Meridien didn't see the project as still viable.

The developers even tried to appease Le Meridien by changing the mix to 240 hotel rooms and 24 condo units, but Le Meridien still wasn't impressed, and they went their own separate ways.

Apparently Le Meridien must be feeling pretty good about the economy to be able to pick and choose it's developers - as currently there are only two Le Meridien's currently under construction in America - so much for that "aggressive global growth plan" they had.
