The Surftides in Lincoln City, Oregon (about 2 hours southwest of Portland) just underwent a million-dollar makeover and has unveiled its new boutique-y, environmentally friendly look -- heart-shaped in-room jacuzzis and all.

The photos on the property's website still show the pre-reno rooms (and frankly, you can tell it was time for a bit of a facelift), but they spaces have been updated in a big way:

New guest rooms effortlessly blend modern amenities such as free wireless Internet, iPod docking stations, and 32" flat-screen televisions with vintage features such as in-room kitchenettes, private beachfront balconies, suites with fireplaces and heart-shaped Jacuzzi baths.

And the rooms -- with an updated color palette of "warm creams and vibrant oranges" -- are environmentally friendly, too! This is fo sho the only eco-conscious hotel we've heard of that also boasts the sexy heart-shaped jacuzzis.

The rooms are also outfitted with custom furniture made from locally forested wood and totally local artwork. The wall coverings are an eco-friendly cork, the lighting is energy-efficient and the carpeting is recycled. Sweet.

Also new: a totally re-done lobby with a huge fireplace and windows that overlook the ocean (where you can curl up with a book checked out from the hotel's library) and an outdoor lounge with fire pits surrounded by a tiered amphitheater.

Rates start around $139.

Surftides-Lincoln City remodel

In October,2008 we stayed at Surftides and were first given a remodeled room.  We have been staying at the Surftides for many years and loved the way the rooms were set up.  These new rooms have some drawbacks.

The first is that they have now put the refrigerator, microwave, coffee machines in a "cubby-hole" area, one on top of the other with no place to set things down while you are working on them.  In the past there was a counter that held these things with working space for fixing small amounts of food or drink.

They have also changed the bathrooms, taking out a larger counter space and mirrors and replacing them with a smaller counter area, and a smaller mirror over the sink. In place of an overhead large light area, there is a single energy efficient bulb in the center of the mirror.  The bulb takes so long to warm up and come on to strength that you now feel like you are in a small, dark cave. Not nearly as bright and spacious feeling as the old design.

We asked for, and got, one of the older rooms.

On the positive side, they have added a patio area with multiple seating benches and although it does not have a view of the water, it is a nice place to sit and read or just enjoy the outdoors.
