Hot on the heels of biodegradable hotel key cards comes another innovation at the Marriott Melbourne where they're trialing an environmentally friendly version of the paper towel.

You may well ask (as we did), why does the Marriott in Melbourne even use paper towels at all--but apparently they have them in public areas and staff areas, but thankfully not in guest rooms. Anyways, they don't have paper towels anywhere anymore, because now they've got the (drumroll ...) Envirocane hand towel.

These babies are made from locally-sourced sugar cane pulp, a by-product of the sugar production process, and of course sugar cane grows a whole lot faster than trees. Plus the chemical processes needed in recycling regular paper aren't needed. Basically, a big green thumbs up.

But it's only a trial (and we suspect these Envirocane hand towels could be pricier than Marriott's regular brand) so we'll wait to see if they catch on or not.
