One of the few hotels in Lisbon you'll catch tourist taking photographs of - the Eden VIP Aparthotel has the most spectacular art deco façade and most visitors think it's some kind of palace.

The 4-star hotel's stone gallery filled with tumbling leafy gardens used to front the Eden theatre before the building was converted by the VIP Hotels group. The conversion was so good the hotel was award several prizes by the Portuguese government.

And to top it all off, it has the most excellent location right in busy Restauradores square, in downtown Lisbon.

The Eden Hotel is practical as well as pretty snazzy inside, as there are kitchenettes in every room and loads of different sized suites for families or couples or groups. So if you don't mind the roaring traffic that fills Restauradores square day and night, you'd do a lot worse than stay here.

The best bit about the hotel has to be the rooftop terrace with a swimming pool and poolside bar. As far as we know, that's unique in Lisbon, so you can feel properly exclusive as you lie back on the sun lounger gazing over the rooftops.

In summer you can also breakfast up there, which is a good thing as the breakfast room is reportedly tiny.

Rates are really reasonable for such a bang-central location and such a good 4-star hotel: €107-€180 ($165-$278) per double per night, depending on whether you take a suite or an apartment.
