According to the AP article on last night's protests, healthcare was at the heart of the matter:
The workers' contract expired in February and their union says Disney's latest proposal makes health care unaffordable for hundreds of employees and creates an unfair two-tier wage system. The union also says Disney wants to create a new category of part-time employees who would receive greatly reduced benefits.
A spokeswoman for Disney said the workers have protested a whopping 14 times, but have only made an effort to sit down and negotiate a deal with the administration 11 times -- and she's pissed that the workers are instead staging "publicity stunts" like this one instead of engaging in constructive deal-making and wocka, wocka, wocka.
32 people were arrested last night, many of them "on a misdemeanor count of failure to obey a police officer and two traffic infractions."
Lots of those taken into custody were dressed up as Disney characters. Yes, they seem to have arrested Peter Pan and Tinkerbell and again we ask: just what is this world coming to?
