Despite the bad news that's been floating around in the hotel world (cough,Vegas,cough) New York hotels have had a pretty good week.
Average room rates are up from last year, occupancy is skyrocketing and the Chelsea 'nabe may be getting a boutique hotel atop a strip club. Kinky!
The Sapphire Strip Club is seeking approval from the Chelsea community board to bring their racy plans to New York. Oh, you haven't heard of Sapphire? Turns out it's the biggest strip club in Las Vegas.
Their future New York property currently houses the ramshackle remains of another former strip joint, while upstairs once sat the seedy old Terminal Hotel, better known as a brothel for the rough crowd.
We stopped paying attention after that, until Curbed dropped the bomb, getting this quote from a Sapphire associate
"This isn't just a strip club. We want to put in a 15-story hotel, like Ian Schrager-style, with a beautiful view of Jersey."
Oh hellz no; everybody knows the only thing this hotel will have is a view of Jersey beauties.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that this Sapphire Club Hotel, if approved, would be nicely situated about six blocks north of The Maritime and Vikram Chatwal's Downtown Dream Hotel. And it will be taller than both...cuz you know...size does matter.
The Standard would also have to share its action and the revamped Holiday Inn Chelsea could direct bored businessmen to go three blocks west for a good time. Suffice it to say that we at HotelChatter could have a field day with this one.
