The Kirketon Fights to Be Coolest Hotel Down Under

It's a good year and a half since we last checked into the guest reactions on Sydney's Kirketon Boutique Hotel, when we lamented that Conde Nast Traveler might have once called it Australia's Coolest Hotel but now ... well, it wasn't anymore. But apparently, the tide has turned again.

Back in May this year the Kirketon began a major renovation project which is due to finish up at the end of this month and they are hoping to regain the Coolest Hotel title.

And this is how they're hoping we'll see the place now:

The new Kirketon is reminiscent of both the great Parisian boutique hotels of old and the new wave of New York international properties.

The stark minimalism (which was getting old) has gone and the new more luxurious version also has some modern touches like laptop safes and WiFi in the rooms. The bar and the restaurant have also been redone. And the grand reopening is scheduled for September 1--not far away now.

Rooms still start at a very reasonable A$155 a night and we're hoping to see some reopening specials come up soon too. Whether or not the Kirketon can become cool again, however, is something we'll have to wait and see about.

I stayed at the Kirketon ages ago - jeez, it has probably been 10 years! And it was indeed the hottest place in Sydney. But you could tell that it was done somewhat on the cheap, and was destined to become shabby one day. Glad to hear they're making it over - and not just rehashing the minimalist thing.
