There's something just a touch too snobby about a hotel that proclaims itself "the only designer boutique hotel" in the country, because New Zealand might be small, but there are definitely other boutique hotels--who's to say whether they're "designer boutique" or not?

So we got off on the wrong foot with the Ohtel in New Zealand's capital, Wellington. Can it redeem itself? It depends.

The rooms are certainly a bit designer-ish with 1950s and 60s furniture and a pretty funky touch. There are only 10 rooms too, so it's probably going to be a quiet, relaxed spot to stay.

But then there are the bathrooms, and these show that following current trends is just not always the best thing to do. Ohtel bathrooms are a big feature of the room, to the point where whatever you're doing in there will be on clear view to whoever else is in the room. In other words, don't book a twin room with your grandmother.

Doubles start at NZ$495 (nearly US$350) which is probably a fair bit for a city like Wellington, not exactly a tourist hotspot. It's not going any further than our "maybe" list.

I liked this hotel...

...up until the $350 bit. If I am paying that much then I def. want a separated bathroom. Unless, I am staying in the room alone. But why would I be in Wellington alone?

Also, the hotel's website has annoying "boutique hotel" music. grrr...

Don't get me started about the website music thing. I'm thinking of starting a breakaway website ... "Hotels That Should be Boycotted Because of Horrid Website Music". www.boycotthotelmusic.com?
