Are Airbeds in Strangers' Apartments Going to Replace Hotel Beds?

August 12, 2008 at 3:31 PM | by Jenna | 1 Comment

Okay, we hope this is never going to happen so we're just going to present this like we believe it's never going to happen.

NYTimes' Freakonomics blog mentioned a new phenomenon called AirBed&Breakfast, in which people with air mattresses and breakfasts (sometimes those breakfasts happen to consist of nothing more than granola bars left on the counter) host strangers in their apartments for a small fee.

People who have air-matresses list themselves on the site and charge guests between $10 and $200-ish for the night (and the breakfast).

Is this going to replace hotels or even hostels? Not likely, but if you're super strapped for cash and especially trusting of strangers, it probably works as a much nicer alternative to the Craigslist ads and corresponding Craigslist creepsters. At least AirBed&Breakfast requires pictures of the apartment hosts.

What do you think? Would you forgo a hotel for an air mattress? Ever? Tell us what you think.
