Getting a true sense of place in a hotel room is becoming harder to do as more and more hotels are favoring anonymously modern decor, and glitz over real geographic substance. Luckily there are still places out there like the Rancho Caymus Inn located in the central Napa Valley in the town of Rutherford.

The Inn rests between vineyards on three sides and is made up of six suites, each of which is named after a famous Napa Valley settler such as writer Robert Louis Stevenson and the famous San Francisco swindler Black Bart.

The beds are made of hand carved walnut, the lighting fixtures are wrought-iron and the ceiling is held up with 100-year old oak beams.

Another true (and romantic) throwback is real fireplaces in each suite. The suites themselves are a good size with a seating area and wet bar so coming back to your room actually feels more like coming back to an apartment.

Like any Inn worth it's weight, breakfast each morning is complimentary or you can make your own coffee in your room. Then you can read up on the historical men and women who would think drinking wine all day and sitting around in style is for weaklings!
