Combine "loft" and "hostel" and you have the pretty-tricky-to-pronounce Loftstel Philadelphia, a neat looking hostel that caught our attention because they have a Nintendo Wii you can use for free in the communal living room.

Beyond the Wii, there are other reasons to crash at the Loftstel if you're traveling on a budget. They cater mostly for long-term guests--the average length of stay is five weeks--so it's the kind of place you might want to stay if you're moving to Philly and looking around for a place to rent, or if you're interning there for the summer.

Of course, the Loftstel is more hostel than loft hotel. There are rooms with 4 bunks, 6 bunks and 8 bunks. Each bunk is a twin-sized bed and there are shared baths on each floor. You get a personal locker to store your stuff but you must provide the lock.

Still, a lot of the amenities here are free. Like the washer and drier, the public computer to check your email, the WiFi in your room (if you've brought your own laptop), towels and linens, long-distance calls and of course, the Wii.

The Loftstel Philadelphia is actually part of a chain--similar places run in New York City, Washington DC and Los Angeles. They're not well signposted, it even seems like they actually want to be a bit anonymous (all the booking is done online and two thirds of the guests are from abroad) so you might have been walking past a Loftstel without even realizing it. However, the hostel chain is on Facebook so as to keep in better touch with its target demographic.

Nightly rates start at $24 and monthly rates start at $500 for students and $700 for non-students.
