Usually we're very wary of hotels that use names evocative of a beach to grab our attention, especially when they're located downtown and far from a beach, but we booked a room in Melbourne's Miami Hotel purely on the strength of a great last-minute deal online and its good location.

Miami, Florida it isn't, but we were definitely surprised at how comfortable The Miami actually is.

You might be put off by the fact that its website targets group accommodation and school groups, but although we saw a bunch of exchange students when we passed through the lobby, we never heard any noise from them.

The Miami Hotel is going through several stages of renovations and we were warned about this during the booking process--but again, we heard nearly nothing, just one twirl of a drill.

The superior rooms (already renovated) are definitely, well, superior, but you do pay a bit more for them.

Just on the fringe of downtown Melbourne, it's walking distance to the Victoria Markets (great shopping) and several train stations, plus the tram stops right nearby.

Breakfast's not usually included in the room rate but that's to your advantage--the North Melbourne café strip is around the corner and there are countless great cafés offering excellent breakfasts.

We got our last minute superior twin room for A$75 (US$$72) although the usual rate is A$149 ($142); they do have winter deals on from A$99 ($95). As a cheap but clean and comfortable way to stay close to everything you need in Melbourne it's a really good bet.
