Sneak Peek, Part Two :: What Else is Going to Be Inside The Jane Hotel

In our story yesterday about the upcoming Jane Hotel from hoteliers Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode, we largely focused on the micro-rooms that would be opening up in mid-August (does that qualify as an oxymoron? Anything with the word "large" next to "micro-rooms" must be.)

However, you aren't going to want to hole up in your room here--not when there will be so much action going on downstairs, upstairs and below stairs.

The Lobby
We toured the lobby space with MacPherson as our guide, who described for us what the place will eventually look like.

The lobby will be divided into two sections. The first will be a small, "cozy" area, MacPherson said where a fire will probably be going in the winter and friends can just hang out and have a few (quiet) drinks.

The second section of the lobby will be much larger and will have a mezzanine level. This will be more of a true hotel lounge. And it will be the place to really do some mingling with other guests. You know, when you get tired of tapping out the Morse code on the walls to the person in the next room/cabin.

Overall, the lobby will have the same sensibility as the Bowery Hotel's lobby, including a similar terrace/patio bar and restaurant. However, here at the Jane, MacPherson will be restoring this ballroom to its original feel and style rather than creating a faux-Victorian ambiance like that of the Bowery.

Fun fact: The lobby was the old Jane Street Theater and Riverview Ballroom where the play-turned-indie hit film Hedwig and the Angry Inch was first staged.

The Rooftop
Obviously, the lobby will the go-to social scene of the hotel, especially since this is where a complimentary continental breakfast will be laid out every morning. Yet when the summer's nice, guests should trek upstairs to the roof.

The rooftop bar will operate out of the Jane Hotel's iconic turret and guests can wander about a section of the rooftop which has unbelievable views of the Hudson River. From up there, Jersey doesn't look half-bad. See below.

The Pool
An activity that can be done year-round at the Jane is swimming. As we heard before, the Jane Hotel will have an indoor swimming pool in the basement. The hotel was once a YMCA back in the 1930s so all MacPherson and co. are doing is restoring it (using original tiles) and adding the cool quotient to it with a sauna and private bathrooms.

(Unfortunately, when we checked the pool out there was a lot of work going on and we didn't feel like taking a picture of construction machines.)

All of this makes for a pretty happening hotel scene from top to bottom. If that wasn't enough, guests will have access to the Socialista restaurant which is a part of the building. So pretty much the only places that won't be seeing any of the action will probably be the micro-rooms.

Although, if you get in there and can squeeze three or more of your friends inside, take a pic and send it to us.

Well, I guess you finally made it to the "famous" "Jane Hotel" or should I say "Riverview"..finally got the "royal guided tour" with McPhearson himself to see it with your own eyes...!!wow I'm impressed!
Well, since you were there last,( good news) the long time General Manager of the property ( Ernest Vago)has been demoted from his position..the news of his removal as GM of the Jane Street Hotel is welcomed with open arms & cheers by most of the long term tenants!Management is now coming directly from a much more professional individual who works directly with McPhearson and knows about the Boutique Hotel industry far better. I have to confess that this is the best move ever that McPhearson and Goode could have ever done. I am even tempted to book a room in the fall.Congrats on this new chapter @ the Jane Hotel.!!!!!

    Why be confused...Juliana..???
couldn't a free citizen of this great country of ours dislike an establishment for their unethical management practices of old..? for bothering tenants who lived in peace..? couldn't I be upset at the fact that (Old )Management knowingly and willingly tried to get people to move out, disrespected us,exposed several us/tenants to "...unhealthy living atmosphere/conditions.." and caused me to get hospitalized..!! would you like me to post on this site the copies and documents/proof of what that Hotel's Management track record is: the lack of care, inconsiderate treatment, lies, illegal practices
etc,etc..? specially you will like this one:It's a fact that many Housing Court Judges& investigators wanted to shut down that hotel or at least get the old Manager arrested.
Now that a new Management is going to be in place, and to find out that the long term tenants are going to be allowed to live there..  new hope is in the atmosphere-at least for now.
So...that's why I hated the Jane Hotel does that answer you last posting..?

    here is the truth

This comment represents and speaks for all the tenants of "the jane hotel" formally known as the " hotel riverview". Only a small percent of us are left after a year of major harassment consisting of construction, bed bugs, rats and mice. sean macphearson and eric goode do not have any regards for humane rights and that is a fact. We have had to live with that fact, but not for long

"congrats"? You have no clue as to what is going on here between tenants and managment. Have you personally spoke with a tenant of the hotel?

Community board vetoed terrace and no pool

Last week community Board #@ unanimously voted against a rooftop terrace at the jane hotel unless the owners can furnish proof (original plans) showing that such a terrace existed when the jane was first designed and built.  They asked Mcpherson why he didn't just refurbish the pool instead of sink all of this money into the rooftop terrace and hestted that the hotel did not have the money to renovate the pool.  Business is so bad that they are renting rooms for $75 a night and most rooms are vacant on a nightly basis.
