MGM's CityCenter Will Feature a Shopping Mecca Called The Crystals

When MGM's CityCenter opens in late 2009, it will change the face of the Las Vegas Strip forever. The complex will feature three hotels, a luxury apartment building and a ton of gaming, restaurant and retail space.

And it's that retail space we're so interested in. CityCenter has wisely ignored the choice to name their shopping complex something tired like "The Shops at City Center" in favor of something a bit more mysterious. CityCenter's retail haven will instead be called, The Crystals.

The Crystals is an architectural vision of Studio Daniel Libeskind with the interiors done by David Rockwell and Rockwell Group. Now, is it just us or does The Crystals sort of remind you of The Fortress of Solitude from Superman.

Anyways, WWD reports that The Crystals will be nothing short of spectacular as far as luxury retailers are concerned:

This is going to be pure luxury," said Farid Matraki, vice president and general manager, The Crystals. "If you go into any other shopping center, there is the luxury element, but it's mixed in with other elements."

So far such "pure luxury" hasn't really moved beyond the usual high-end mall staples like Ermenegildo Zegna, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co. However, The Crystals ups the ante with jewelry stores like H.Stern, Rolex, Mikkimoto, Roberto Coin and Tourbillon.

As for clothing, Tom Ford is considering a store in here and Marni is already signed. All in all there will be 71-77 retail shops when The Crystals open last next year. And if you just wish you could stop and smell the flowers in Las Vegas, you can do that here too as CityCenter will feature a 5,000-square-foot "flower carpet" with flowers changed weekly, inspired by a flower carpet in Brussels. Wow.

This is...

some seriously Dubai-style shopping. Though maybe they're getting the idea from the super-rich weirdos in Macau.

What an amazing design

From the pictures, the new shopping center looks amazing, highly futuristic and bright. They probably opted for the name of Crystalis exactly because of this diamond corners design. This shopping center will feature all the array of services one could need, form dry cleaning to flowers and roses delivery. It will be a real jewel in the center of MGM.
