While our brothers at Jaunted have been off stomping around Baltimore this week, we've jetted off on our own little field trip to Aruba. We'll be scoping out the hotel scene here and will be reporting our findings all week long.
We spent yesterday hangin' by the pool at the Marriott Aruba Resort (we're staying at the Marriott Surf Club within the complex and we'll bring you a full room tour tomorrow). We were looking to get some reading done and spend a quiet afternoon poolside but, uh, no.
The scene at the pool on a summer Tuesday afternoon sort of reminded us of our crazy college Spring Breaking days. It was certainly no Hard Rock Sunday Rehab - but then, nothing is quite like that - but everyone seemed to be young and in full-force party mode thanks to the major facilities, organized drinking contests and tempting cocktail specials.
The Scene
The resort is located just a few steps from Palm Beach, but if you're not into the whole sand thing, the resort offers an impressive array of chlorinated water for you to enjoy.
The centerpiece of the pool area is a shallow-ish pool with a volleyball net and a swim-up bar that always seems to be offering a drink special of some sort (and a two-for-one happy hour) so you can take a break between rowdy (LOUD) games of volleyball with whatever lovely group of twentysomethings you happen to bring with you or run into.
Cool Features
Right next to the volleyball/drinking pool, there are folks floating on the lovely lazy river that floats all the way over to another pool with pretty waterfalls and less drunk people. The downside: you have to purchase your own tube in the lobby giftshop for 7 bucks, and what the hell are you going to do with a lime green polka dotted inner tube when your vacation is over? (We say: sell it for 5 bucks and make someone's day!)
There is also a massive outdoor hot tub that's hidden from hotel windows' views beneath some palm trees (hey, we're just sayin') and a few steps beyond it, you've got beachy goodness.
Bottom Line
There are organized drinking contests every so often plus some fairly rowdy games of pool bingo - and for whatever reason, the pool bar was giving away free beer for a short period of time early in the afternoon. So, again, don't come here if you don't want to party or watch the partiers party.
The verdict: awesome facilities, plenty of chairs and umbrellas, but lots of drunk people and not a whole lot of peace and quiet. If you're looking for a quiet afternoon, we recommend hitting the beach. Which we didn't do.
