Smoking Jacket Required To View Redesigned Luxury Collection Website

Hotels within Starwood's Luxury Collection banner have always been the creme-de-la-creme of hotels; these are hotels that make the Sheraton & St Regis look like an EconoLodge. In other words, they are hotels that want to join with Starwood, yet still have their own highly respected reputation and don't want to put Westin on the side of their 100 year old limestone building.

This weekend, Starwood re-launched the Luxury Collection's website, giving the brand a new look and feel - replacing the old-fashioned look with a modern, sophisticated feel that still exudes luxury. They even fancied up the name a bit - by adding "Hotels & Resorts". In fact while viewing the site, we felt we should be wearing a suit and tie, smoking a pipe and petting a small dog.

Most hotel websites tell a story - how great the hotel is, how many amenities the hotel has, how far the local airport is, etc. The new Luxury Collection website tells much more than that, it's aim is also to allow you to discover cultural events taking place in the city surrounding the hotel, and while you're there - stay at a Luxury Collection hotel.

They also have a cool area called "Explore the Collection" which allows you to view the hotels which meet certain criteria, such as Romance, Yachting, Castle, or Fashion and Shopping if you're looking to plan your stay around a certain type of pursuit.

Now that Hilton has Ross Klein--who used to be in charge of the Luxury Collection at Starwood--we wonder if Hilton has finally got the memo about putting some more pizzaz into their brands.

I am sorry, but creme-de-la-creme?  Not exactly. Almost every Luxury Collection Hotel I have been to (which is at least 6 of them), is significantly below St. Regis.  There are some decent hotels.... but nothing close to other Luxury Chains (Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, Sofitel, etc....).

Example: San Diego, San Francisco, Diplomat, Wigwam.

Site looks decent though.

Yeah alotta the luxury collection stuff is branded as something else.  The Westin St. Francis is Luxury Collection, and while nice, it's not what you'd call magical.
