We've had a good look at many of the big chain hotels in Beijing recently--you know, because of that big sports thing comin' up--but we've been neglecting the cute boutique hotels (that aren't called boutique because most of China doesn't know about that yet).

One little place in the Dongcheng district of Beijing has caught our eye: the Tianxiang Heritage Courtyard Hotel. It's got just 22 rooms and is tucked into a quiet side street, but anyone who finds it seems to love it.

The Tianxiang is still close to all the main sights, and there's an underground train station a short walk away. Yet it's in a traditional old building that could be like time traveling to old Beijing (except that they have internet connections in the rooms). Guests all compliment the cultural feeling of the place and the knowledgeable staff.

In case you're wondering, "Tianxiang" means "heaven", and we're not exaggerating when we say that recent guests really thought this appropriate. Double rooms start from US$111 in off peak season and $354 during the Games; the VIP room goes up to $206 in peak, but $1,060 a night during the Olympic month. To be honest, we're putting this one our list of places to stay in the future.
