The Five Best Hotels With Recording Studios

Imagine you are a jet-setting rock star and your label is being really pushy about getting you to lay down some new tracks for your album. But all you really want to do is be big pimpin' all over the world. Is there a way to do both? Actually there is.

A few hotels offer recording studios inside their properties, making it possible for rock stars and pop stars to take a working vacation.

Of course, you don't need to be a big time rock and pop star to book these hotel studios, you just need plenty of cash.

That means any monied up schmo can throw down a hack version of Chocolate Rain, upload it somewhere, dream of going viral, then end up on VH1's The Best Week Ever. Ah, the wonders of the new millenium.

PALMS LAS VEGAS

The Palms private recording studio has been frequented by many pop stars, but usually it's Britney Spears that's the frequent guest here. And Ali Lohan, who was featured going there on the reality show "Living Lohan."

Also, her album is also set to come out on Maloof Music, the record label started by the Palms owners, the Maloof brothers. Yes, they are hoteliers, basketball team owners and now music moguls.

There are two studios here--X and Y. Studio X is the largest facility built in Las Vegas. It's so big you can record and stage a dance number here.

And if you want to use the recording studios why not book one of the Palms' luxury suites like the Hardwood Suite, the Sky Villa or the King Pin, with its own bowling lane.

THE SETAI

The Setai in Miami just opened the Lenny Kravitz Recording Studio last month after a long two years of hype.

The studio is located in a two-floor penthouse suite in the hotel and has ocean views and private outdoor patio. The 2,500 sq.ft. space has a Solid State Logic C-200 Digital Console and ATC monitors. There are two "live" rooms, a vocal booth, control room, lounge and conference rooms. The studio also has 5.1 high-definition audio and can be used for both film and video shoots.

The place has its own director and chief engineer, Matt Knobel and of course, that Lenny Kravitz/"American Woman" cache.

THE MOSSER HOTEL

The Mosser Hotel in San Francisco is less glam than The Palms or The Setai but when traveling musicians roll on through this historic rock city, they can always do some recording here. In fact, it prides itself on being the only hotel with a recording studio in San Francisco.

The Studio Paradiso boasts a large control room with "excellent isolation", four tracking rooms and a whole bunch of other gear listed here.

The rooms at the hotel, however, may not be suited for rock stars. Most of them are teeny tiny and some even have shared baths.

SUNSET MARQUIS

This hotel has long been popular with LA's rock scene and as a way to keep their favor, the hotel installed a recording studio in the basement in 1993.

Actually the story goes like this: musicians Jed Leiber and Jeff Beck were jamming in their hotel room, much to the dismay of other guests. So the hotel's GM told them to go downstairs. They found an empty space and thus The Nightbird Recording Studio was born. To date, artists like Mary J. Blige, Seal, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Aerosmith, and Ozzy Ozbourne have all recorded here.

The place just got a renovation back in December and sports "the best vintage equipment and the most advanced technology in digital audio and video. Perhaps if you record here, you might also gain entrance into the super VIP, Whiskey Bar.

THE GEEJAM RESORT

This Jamaican resort has had some of our favorite artists record at their studio like Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Common, India.Arie, Björk, Tanya Stephens, Sly and Robbie and Gorillaz.

In fact, the Geejam recording studio started as a studio first by music producer Jon Baker who partnered with music exec Steven Beaver to add some rooms. The Geejam Resort officially opened in March and is now owned by record mogul Chris Blackwell as part of his Island Outpost hotel collection.

But this isn't some mega-beach resort. Geejam only has three deluxe cabins, one suite, and a self-contained three-bedroom villa. As for the recording studio, the place features Pro Tools and a Neve console, and you can't really beat the relaxed atmosphere of a Jamaican beach to find your inner groove.

Know of more recording studios inside hotels? Let us know where.

A Wollywood recording studio? That could be dangerous. People getting drunk in the hotel and thinking they are talented enough to lay down some tracks...i wouldn't want to be there for that.
