Cubicle Dreamin' is a feature in which we ask the hotel mavens to take some time out of their busy work day, surf the Internet, and tell us what hotel they wish they could beam themselves to right that very second--all on the slave driving companies dime, of course. Oh, like these people aren't surfing aimlessly anyway--at least now their purposeless clicking will be cobbled together into useful hotel stories--we hope. In this episode, Hotel Maven Jennifer Merritt fantasizes about a weekend (not too far) out of the city. Enjoy.
It is just plain gorgeous in New York today, so rather than escape to somewhere warmer or somewhere colder, I just want to stay put. Kind of. I want to rent a car and drive north to New Paltz for a stay at Mohonk Mountain House.
Having stayed there once before, I know this 265-year-old Victorian castle on Lake Mohonk can give me the exact type of getaway I'm looking for: one with peace and quiet. I'd book a room for the weekend facing the lake--important since rooms have no air conditioning, you must rely on the cool air coming off the water--and saddle up on the balcony with a book of crossword puzzles.
At some point, I'd book a spa treatment, hike a fraction of the 85 miles of trails, go swimming in the lake and play tennis, though I can't really play tennis, but that doesn't matter because this is Cubicle Dreamin', right? All of this, plus meals and afternoon tea and cookies, are included in the room rate, which start at $300. (Activities like golf, horseback riding and caving are extra.)
All in all, I guess I'm just feeling a little nostalgic for the days my parents would send me off to camp, where my only responsibility was getting out of the bed in the morning. Mohonk is kind of like camp, except waaaaaaay better and with maid service. Plus, I don't even have to get out of bed if I don't want to.
