Construction Update: The Chelsea Atlantic City

June 12, 2008 at 12:45 PM | by AndrewC | 1 Comment

"The Chelsea" sign is still under construction

Last week we had an opportunity to get a construction tour of The Chelsea, the first non-gambling boutique hotel in Atlantic City, and even though it's not opening until August, we were quite impressed with what we saw.

Our tour guide was Curtis Bashaw, CEO of Cape Advisors which owns The Chelsea and also owns and operates a number of hotels in Cape May, NJ.

The Chelsea is made up of the former Holiday Inn and Howard Johnson hotels located right on the ocean just south of the Tropicana casino. The Holiday Inn building will be the main Chelsea property while the HoJo building will house the Chelsea Lite rooms.

And to say that Bashaw and co. have gutted the property and started over is almost an understatement. Yet, they still have managed to keep some of the original parts of the hotels---such as the tile in the bathrooms, and some room furniture from the former Howard Johnson. Don't worry, they've replaced the mattresses!

Keep reading for more on The Chelsea's construction update including pictures!

Pool Scene: The Chelsea is going to have two pools, one which will be open year round, and will be located right next to a "Co-ed Social Sauna." This will essentially be a huge clover leaf-shaped, salt-water jacuzzi where guests can mingle and have cocktails.

The year-round pool is set in a courtyard surrounded by a glass wall on one side and the Chelsea Lite rooms on the other side, giving it a voyeuristic, fun, playful feel.

Entertainment Mecca: "The 5th Floor" of the hotel will be Chelsea's entertainment mecca where you will find Chelsea Prime (a 60's-like supper club) in the former Holiday Inn Ballroom. Chelsea Prime will overlook the beach, as well as the living room bar, the game room, and other bars.

The nightlife of the Chelsea is being run by the owners of the Beatrice Inn--almost ensuring a ridiculous nightlife scene for those who want to have fun but not gamble.

Beach Club: Curtis was very excited about the hotel's beach club that all guests (and non-guests too) can enjoy right on the beach in front of the hotel.

Every hotel guest will be given two towels, chairs and an umbrella so that they can sun and tan on the beach, as well as be waited on hand and foot by the staff from Teplitzky's who will serve food and drinks.

Beach cabanas will also be available to hotel guests. Non-guests will also be able to utilize the beach, but may have to pay a small fee.

Party Rooms: We were kind of intrigued by the idea of these Chelsea Lite rooms and Curtis told us that these rooms are for groups of people to come in and have fun. Most of those rooms will have double beds, almost like a college dorm setting.

The Luxe rooms in the main building are more "serious". The Penthouse floor is also made up of rooms with fireplaces and living rooms. All will have floor to ceiling windows with views of the beach and ocean. The Chelsea is even planning a Rockstar suite here for headliners and performers coming to the area to crash in for a night or two.

Playful Spa: Another big part of the Chelsea is the Spa, but Curtis and his team have put a twist on the relaxation haven--it's going to be more fun and playful rather than zen.

"Rose water is so yesterday," as Curtis explained to us. The Spa will have multiple treatment rooms and the offerings will be based on salt-water treatments.

Opening Day: So when will this bundle of fun and playfulness open and blow Atlantic City away? Currently they are shooting for an August 1st opening date for both the Chelsea Lite and Chelsea Luxe rooms, as well as full operation of the amenities throughout the hotel.
