When we looked at the Adelphi Hotel in Melbourne about 18 months ago, our conclusion was that it just didn't match the hype. Turns out others agreed with us but since some new owners took over just about that time, things have been looking up.

It's a slow process because, according to the new owners, it's all about "evolution, not revolution". They have opened a spa complex on the ninth floor, and in quite a unique deal, this spa is run by staff from a beauty therapy college nearby--and even wait staff in the restaurant and reception staff are graduates of the college, so whoever you speak to knows all about the spa treatments too.

There are a bunch of other special touches which seem to be helping the Adelphi to fill previously unbooked rooms. For example, they now use locally-sourced, organic food in the kitchen (and the chef, incidentally, can double as a yoga teacher when needed), they have developed a unique-to-Adelphi shaving cream, and they changed mattresses after getting regular guests to trial several different kinds.

The guest feedback is certainly getting more positive, and we like it that the manager often responds to comments and complaints made on TripAdvisor. With more "rejuvenation" planned for the hotel in the future, it'll be one to keep an eye on. Rates at the moment start at A$255 (US$240) during the week and A$305 (US$290) on weekends, with suites being more than double that.
