Best and Worst International Hotel WiFi 2008

May 7, 2008 at 10:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

Now that we've squared away the Best and Worst WiFi Hotels stateside, it's time to look at what's happening abroad.

Baby bro Jaunted has continued its WiFi Week by publishing yesterday some helpful tips on finding wireless when traveling outside the U.S. and typically, you can always get some sort of access in a cafe.

But here we'll be looking at the hotels abroad where HotelChatter editors and contributors found or didn't find WiFi. We've been keeping tabs on the International Hotel WiFi scene all year long and unlike what's happening here at home, the Hotel WiFi trend seems to be improving in other countries.

For instance, we traveled to London and had complimentary WiFi in our hotel near Hyde Park. Also, several small UK-based chains have decided to give up WiFi for free to its guests. Over in Spain, Best Western continues to offer free WiFi and we even found out that there's WiFi in the Hilton in Cairo. Of course, it's at a fee of $7 but still, that's improvement.

Something that totally makes us melt? Radisson SAS hotel in Europe publishing a list of their hotels that offer free WiFi. Life is good again!

The Sofitel Thallaso in Corisca was a headache for foreign correspondent for Monica Guy.

Hotel Pont Royal in Paris keeps WiFi free and even has a handy description about it.

Berlin Hotels have confusing WiFi policies. Most likely, you can get in free in the lobbies at the bigger chains but you have to pay for it in-rooms and it's often cabled, not wireless.

The Mooseleitner in Bavaria has free wireless internet throughout.

Hungary

The Danubius Hotel Group in Budapest charges $23 for 24 hours if you're in one of their 3- or 4-star hotels but a jaw-dropping $45 if you staying in a 5-star hotel instead.

Austria

The Bristol Hotel in Vienna charges 36 Euro a day for ethernet. Not surprisingly, this is a Starwood property.

HOTELS IN CENTRAL AMERICA

Mexico

Ceiba del Mar in Cancun has free WiFi throughout.

Dos Casas in San Miguel de Allende is a luxury hotel with free WiFi. Imagine that.

Villa Maria Cristina in Guanajuato also offers free WiFi. We like Mexico.

HOTELS IN SOUTH AMERICA

Argentina

La Cayetana in Buenos Aires had free wireless throughout.

Uruguay

El Diablo Tranquilo in Punta del Diablo had free wireless throughout. But when too many people are on the network the speed drops noticeably.

HOTELS IN THE CARIBBEAN

Bahamas

The Cove Eleuthera has free wireless in the main building.

The Atlantis Resort in Nassau was ethernet only at $10 a day.

HOTELS IN ASIA

Japan

The Comfort Hotel in Hiroshima offers instructions on getting onto the WiFi network in Japanese but it's not different than what you do in a Comfy Inn stateside.

Thailand

The Oriental Bangkok has free wireless internet throughout.

Singapore

Singapore Marriott offers it free in the lobby and public areas but makes you pay for ethernet in the rooms.

China

The Langham Place Hotel in Hong Kong has "omnipresent WiFi."

HOTELS IN AUSTRALIA

Melbourne

The Westin Melbourne offers it free in the lobby but not in the guest room. Ditto for the Hotel Lindrum.

HOTELS IN AFRICA

Egypt

The Hilton on the Nile in Cairo gets mad props for having WiFi but it could be even better by making it free.

South Africa

The Aster Palms in Paarl has free internet.
