The Bolton is very centrally located in downtown Wellington and some call it a boutique hotel, although with 142 rooms it seems a little larger than an average boutique. The rooms include kitchenettes with fridges and microwaves if you want to self-cater. It's been undergoing some renovations so it's starting to look very modern, and it also offers WiFi (but you have to pay for it). There's a swimming pool, spa and sauna in the hotel and one restaurant on site featuring "regional New Zealand cuisine".
There's one more thing that attracted us to the Bolton Hotel--they have a special package called "A Chocolate Affair". The deal includes a night in a luxury suite with late checkout, two cooked breakfasts, and the best bits--a packet of Belgian chocolates (our favorites, Guylian seashells) and a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream. Very tasty, and very reasonable at NZ$270 (US$210).
