If you want to trek to Machu Picchu, but sleep beforehand with a bit of style, take note of the new La Casona Inkaterra, opening this month. It's Cusco's first boutique hotel (with just 11 rooms), a renovation of a colonial manor house. Each suite overlooks either the hotel's courtyard (Patio Suites) or has views over the town of Cusco (Plaza Suites).
It's not a cheap way to stay in Peru, with double suites including breakfast starting at $600 per night. But for the price, you do get luxury and good service, with promises to cater for all your individual whims. And we love the look of that log fire.
In the spirit of authentic travel, La Casona Inkaterra's website proclaims your stay will be "100% carbon neutral", a combination of green practices in their daily activities and their donations to Sustainable Travel International to neutralize their unavoidable carbon impact.
This all sounds great on a theoretical level, but we're not so confident that it's seen through at a practical level (see log fire above...)--we might need to see the green plan in action in the next few years to believe it.
