Remnants of Hotel WiFi Week: A Shout-Out to Motel 6

May 12, 2008 at 2:30 PM | by | Comments (2)

We shoved Hotel WiFi Week 2008 in your face everyday last week and it's not quite over yet. We still have a major Hotel WiFi map to unveil, it's just taking some time to get it perfect.

But until that's done we want to give a shout-out to Motel 6 Hotels for offering up WiFi. Andrew Calvo lauded the budget chain for its always reliable WiFi and yesterday we received an email from a serious road warrior who gave big-ups to Motel 6.

Keep reading for the full letter.

Les writes:

Being a one man business who travels yearly from SoCal to the NY City area, from Central Florida to Seattle and 20 other spots between, I pay my own expenses and generally use a motel for less than 10 per day.

I have found many times that the Motel 6 chain's newer stores have had the best "bang for the buck" for those not interested in impressing others with a name.

All of that said, the chain has added WiFi in most of their locations in the past few months.   I have had great results with their wireless, often transferring gigs of files (high resolution photography) without any problem.

While the "company stores" charge $2.99 for 24 hours of access (beginning with your first log on), I have yet to find a franchise Motel 6 that charges for WiFi service.

Motel 6, which is owned by Accor Hotels who also run Novotels and Sofitels here in North America, has just unveiled a new room prototype called the Phoenix which makes the brand and its free WiFi a lot more appealing. Will we be logging in next time from a Motel 6 on one of our many adventures? It's looking likely.

Re: Remnants of Hotel WiFi Week: A Shout-Out to Mo

That's not true.

Motel 6 charges $2.99 per day for WiFi.

I'm all for the right moment for budget lodging-- but there is no right moment for Motel 6.

Re: Remnants of Hotel WiFi Week: A Shout-Out to Mo

Well it looks like the Motel 6s that Accor Hotels own and operate will charge you $2.99 a day for unlimited WiFi while, depending on the owners, some franchises of Motel 6 will offer it up for free.

But $2.99 a day for unlimited WiFi? That's totally acceptable. I mean, I have def. forced over $7 for airport WiFi that I needed to use only for 10 minutes before my flight took off. grrr...
