From the Terrible Timing Department....
In light of the recent Miley Cyrus/semi-topless Vanity Fair photo controversy, maybe Loews Hotels should have held off on this press release.
At participating Loews Hotels from Santa Monica to Lake Las Vegas, tweens and teens can now add 'spa' on their list of vacation to-dos through a customized collection of playful packages that include colorful manis, fruity pedis, princess-like up-dos, cleansing facials, aromatic massages, make-up lessons and more.
For the record, we have nothing wrong with little girls wanting their nails done or their hair blown-out. Seriously, if we had some of these options when we were young, we would have saved our mother so much grief from the inevitable spilling of nail polish remover, accidentally painting the rug/table/desk with Revlon nail polish and the DIY job we did on our bangs not once, not twice but three times.
Still, there's something a little off about these offerings.
Like at the Salon Moulay at the Loews Lake Las Vegas, the Mini Moulay Little Spa Day offers kiddies under 12 a:
Lil' Miss Mani or Pedi (a manicure or pedicure with soak, shaping, buffing, hand or foot massage and polish), Princess Updo (an elegant up-do perfect for special occasions) and Tiny Touchups (a mini-makeup application with lip gloss, blush, body shimmer and perfume).
The total cost is $160 and includes little munchies and even a mocktail. Don't worry, a parent must accompany any child under 16 years of age into the spa or salon, as well as sign a waiver.
Emily Goldfischer, Vice President of Loews Hotels, did reel in any Jon Benet fears by saying "this collection seeks to establish a nice balance, offering fun, kid-friendly spa treatments that retain a ‘let’s play dress-up’ quality." That makes it sound a little more bearable we guess.
At the Loews Coronado Bay Resort near San Diego, the offerings are more teen-centric and these actually sound pretty cool. There's a special teen lounge tricked out by Pottery Barn's PBteen that is equipped with two iChairs and Nintendo Wii.
The Golden Goddess spa package includes a Youth Therapy Facial (25-minute green tea and ginger facial), Ultra Bronzing Organic Spray-On Tanning (a full-body organic spray-on treatment), and Golden Pedi (featuring gold minerals and Artemisia flowers).
Aside from the spray-on tan, that seems pretty mild. But then we read this bit in the press release.
Teens can also Teens can also opt for a variety of other services at Sea Spa, including belly dancing classes, Aveda hair treatments and a couple's massage with their BFF.
Wow. Really? Seriously?
So in the end, we can't really blame Vanity Fair for sexing up 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, can we? Not only are we offering these types of services to little girls, there seems to be a demand for it because a major hotel chain wouldn't slop together these kind of treatments if there wasn't.
Ahh, how we miss the good old days of the Sweet Sixteen pajama parties hotels were offering just two years ago.
