You know the dilemma. You're just about to book a hotel which you think looks and sounds wonderful. And then you read the scathing bloggers' reviews, telling horror stories of non-flushing toilets and hairs in the breakfast eggs, of strange lumps in the bed and bumps in the night.

We have that dilemma about Les Jardins du Marais in Paris. Please help if you can - here it is:

The website looks promising, despite the tacky music. The location is excellent for young trendies - it's on a quiet street right slap bang between the trendy Marais area (designer boutiques, trendy restaurants, cosy wine bars and gays) and the up-and-coming Oberkampf area (Arabs and Brazilians, cheap happy-hour, loud live music, fun & japes).

And it ticks all the check boxes on the design front, with Philippe Starck chairs and modern arty lighting, colour schemes and furniture. And on the practicalities front, with private parking, room service until midnight, on-site bar, restaurant, and fitness suite, Wi-Fi access, and all the rest.

Les Jardins du Marais is a 4-star Home Plazza hotel charging between €200-€350 ($315-$550) a night for a standard double room and up to €600 ($940) for a junior suite, so it should be reliably decent.

We visited just now and it feels laid-back and comfortable. Staff are friendly and efficient, place feels stylish, restaurant/bar looks good and not too jaw-droppingly expensive (and there's a cheaper place on the corner), the rooms we saw were clean and decent, it should be perfect.....but.....

....We've just looked up reviews and they're pretty damning. Rude housekeeping staff, lumpy beds, rubbish TVs and €10-a-can minibars. Crappy breakfasts for which you pay €20 or go hungry. No sleep, because although it's on a quiet street, apparently the late-night revellers keep you up until morning.

In summary, as one guest put it,

Although it sounded lovely by the example of the hotel on-line, the hotel itself was a nightmare.

Oh dear. The power of the blog. But we'd really, really, really, like to like this hotel. In fact, we'd like to book it for a friend who's coming to Paris soon.

Please help - has anyone stayed at Les Jardins du Marais recently who might have something positive to say about the place? Put your reviews in comments below.
