So there we were, strolling by a New York City Starbucks we'd passed probably a thousand times...when we noticed a glass door that turned out to be a hotel: Hotel 373 Fifth Avenue.

This 70-room boutique hotel is truly is all about location. More about that momentarily...

Rooms range from Queen Petites to King Contemporaries, and the prices (depending on when you book and when you're traveling) range from US$180 to $400 a night. Amenities include iPod docking stations, free movies on their flat-screen LCDs, free local calls, WiFi, and bathrobes.

373 is blessed with unparalled real estate. You're right on Fifth Avenue, literally in the shadow of the Empire State Building. It's a short amble to The New York Public Library and Bryant Park, among other choice Gotham must-sees.

There's major shopping a block away on 34th Street, and a Starbucks right downstairs (a good thing, too, since 373 doesn't serve breakfast or have any room service.)  Plus you're just around the corner from E. 36th Street between Fifth and Madison.  In recent years it's become a major party block, with a handful of massive pubs that take their enormous offerings of draft beer very seriously. It also has several excellent restaurants, and a tequileria.

And transportation? You're a block from Herald Square, where you can pick up the N/R, and the Path (if you simply must get to Jersey). It's three blocks from the 6 train, and the downtown Fifth Avenue bus stops on the other side of the street. Penn Station and Grand Central are also just a few blocks away. Fuggedaboutit.

Tripadvisor reviews are overall very positive -- a few posters complain about small accomodations and noise off Fifth Avenue.

Welcome to The Big Apple, cowboys! Little rooms and traffic din are pretty much unavoidable here in Gotham. But not everybody can snag hotel rooms as central as these.
