This is room 1134 inside the Hyatt Regency Denver where we spent some time this past weekend. As we told you yesterday, we had a successful check-in attempt with the self-service kiosks in the lobby and that probably set the tone for the rest of our stay.
Actually, maybe the feel-good tone started way before that when we actually booked the hotel room. We did it through Priceline, our first time booking through that site. And our bid of $75 was accepted right away.
Regular room rates at the hotel, which are higher during the week when conventions are in full force across the street, are about $235. That might be too high for us, after all it's a Hyatt in Denver near a convention center but the place is pretty fantastic.
And since the Dems have made this their headquarters hotel for the DNC this August, here's what they can expect.
Room Reaction
Standard Hyatt furniture throughout but we really liked our king-sized bed with soft white sheets, seven pillows and no silly floral comforter. In fact, there wasn't any top cover to the bed which we like because that means less scary germs.
We also dug the desk which had a smaller pull-out desk that swings to the side, giving you double the space. Also, we appreciated that this Hyatt thought to put four outlets right above the desk instead of having us scramble underneath or search behind a nightstand for an outlet. And kudos for the recycling bin.
The bathroom was fairly decent with a bunch of towels, so-so toiletries and not too harsh lighting. Our only gripes in here was the door was so large and it swung inward so you had to full close the door before you could stand or sit comfortably in here. Also, the water pressure was hard!
Our view was also pleasant, overlooking the convention center and downtown Denver.
Internet Connect
Hyatt is still in a partnership with T-Mobile so you had to sign up for $9.95 a day which you could charge back to your room or on a credit card. But it worked everywhere throughout the hotel and was fast.
Amenity Assessment
The room featured a Samsung flat-screen TV with the standard movie and adult movies on demand, plus recently aired TV shows that you may have missed like last week's episode of The Office. That's available for $4.95 plus tax.
The desk had a mini-coffee maker and the nightstand had an iHome iPod docking station/alarm/radio/clock. There were 1 liter Aquafina water bottles on sale for $6 a piece. But the cafe in the lobby was selling a smaller size for $3 so that wasn't much of a money-saver.
Working It Out
The gym is located on the 5th floor and has beautiful views of the city. All the machines are new, new, new and there's every weight-lifting contraption you could ever dream of along with stability balls and those rubber-band workout things. There's also a small indoor pool, hot tub and small on site too.
Dining
We ordered room service for breakfast and it was super-fast and nothing was missing. The hotel even threw in a small smoothie sample for us to try.
The hotel also has a lobby restaurant, Altitude as well as the Strata Bar. But on the 23rd floor is the Peaks Lounge which has killer views of Denver and is a great place to grab a drink or two. Remember, the altitude gets you drunk faster!
Back down in the lobby, there's a Perks coffee shop that brews Starbucks coffee and doubles as a gift shop and a cafe.
Bottom Line
We loved this hotel. Probably because we got such a deal at $75. But the place is new, the staff is helpful and the hotel has the modern guest in mind, i.e. someone who wants technology, clean spaces and a semi-hip place to grab a drink.
We didn't catch much of what was in the surrounding area aside from the convention center and the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant. But cabs were ready and waiting all the time. Final word: The Dems are going to be quite pleased.
