Our first stop in Uruguay during our recent field trip was Colonia, a Unesco World Heritage Site and tourist town par excellence. As it's just a short ferry ride from bustling Buenos Aires, it's a popular spot for stressed out Argentines to mellow out.

Playing a big role in that is the sleepy Posada Plaza Mayor, a smallish guesthouse in the heart of the old quarter. Most rooms surround a leafy courtyard and have that old-hotel-in-a-historic-place vibe. Our room was one of two upstairs that was super quiet and outfitted with slightly more modern furnishings.

Check-In and Service
As this is a tourist town, the staff speaks English, so that makes things easy. On arrival, you'll also get a discount card for some places around town. (Ask for it if it's not offered up.)

We didn't have much need for pampering, but our limited interaction with the staff was all very pleasant.

Room Reaction
Not super nice, but not bad at all. This isn't a design hotel by any means, but the bed was comfy and the minibar was fully stocked--and dirt cheap.

The Bathroom
Turning on the shower was like opening a fire hydrant. The amenities were weak, but we'd packed our own anyway.

Internet
The WiFi is free and we had no trouble connecting. Nice.

Bar and Restaurant Scene
There's no in-house lunch, dinner or drinks, but there are tons of places literally a two-minute walk away. The hotel guest discount card works at some of 'em, too.

Breakfast is served buffet-style in a cute dining room overlooking the Rio de la Plata. It's nothing spectacular, but--surprisingly for South America--the coffee refills are endless.

Bottom Line
This place bills itself as a retreat for honeymooners and the overworked, and it definitely delivers on the tranquility. It's not super-fancy, but for the price we didn't mind. Rooms start at about $90.
