More Affordable Options Outside Venice: The Casa Coloniale in Verona

Venice's romance without Venice's high prices are an hour and 25-minute train ride away in Verona. Verona, the place where Romeo stood under Juliet's balcony wooing her (before climbing up there and wooing her in a rather more physical way). It's small and sweet and, like Padua, a damn sight cheaper than Venice except during the famous August opera festival.

So what's Verona's hotel scene like? Spotty....If you're a creature of fantasy, you wouldn't go far wrong with the Byblos Art Hotel. Rich gits and honeymooners stay in the Baglioni.

Budget lovers stay in the Casa Coloniale. It mistakenly calls itself a bed and breakfast, but it's actually one of Verona's best, cleanest and definitely cheapest hotels.

Unlike many of Verona's hotels, which are located outside of the historic city centre and need a shuttle or a taxi to reach, the Casa Coloniale is right on the Piazza Erbe, one of the Verona's main squares. A few steps from everything you want to see (50m from Juliet's house) as well as all the good eating and drinking options.

And unlike many of Verona's hotels, which are over-the-top fluffy romance and frilly chandeliers, the Casa Coloniale is bright, clean and simple. Large rooms, tiled bathrooms, vibrant splashes of colour. It only re-opened after renovation in 2006 and the place is still shiny and spotless.

Friendly staff and a good breakfast. No WiFi, though, or other internet access. To be honest, though, it's quite nice to have a break - no-one goes to Verona to work or surf the internet.

The Best Bit
Rates from €60 to €110 for a double for a night, including breakfast, and only a small supplement if you want to bung another bed in the room. Bargain.

What's the Catch?
Um, the hotel's only got three rooms. Three rooms over three floors. So you won't get much noise from the neighbours....but you have to book a hundred years in advance if you want to get a room.

This hotel looks very cool. Actually way cool compared to what I remember of Verona which was sort of dull.
