The Hotel Plaza Athénée - we don't know for sure, but it's a good bet Brit singer Amy Winehouse stayed here last week for her brief appearance at the opening of the luxe Fendi boutique in Paris.

Amy isn't known for her love of exercise, and the Plaza Athénée is right opposite the new branch of the designer boutique on Paris's most exclusive street, Avenue Montaigne. It's part of Paris's Golden Triangle, so-called because you can only stay or shop there (Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Armani, Christian Dior, Prada, Valentino etc) if everything you touch turns to gold.

The Athénée has a all-star guest list: Cameron Diaz, Johnny Depp, Leonardo di Caprio, Beyoncé,and of course Carrie Bradshaw. Not to mention all the other ones who won't give their name.

Amy's Fendi appearance, at which she sang for 45 minutes to a select crowd of 800, apologised for her bad dress sense (she was awarded the prize of 'worst-dressed celebrity' by NME magazine) and allegedly picked up a €750,000 ($1,140,000) cheque in return, was attended by other celebs, including Rihanna and Marie-Kate and Ashley Olsen. We dread to think how much air-kissing was going on in the Plaza Athénée's trendy Terrasse Montaigne outside bar and restaurant.

We haven't stayed at the Plaza Athénée and since rates for a double room range from a 'special deal' of €650 ($1,000) a night, to a night in the Presidential suite for nearly €5,000 ($7,600), we're not likely to. But we'll give you a quick flavour:

Built in 1911 and part of the Dorchester Collection, which also includes The Dorchester in London, The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Someone called Countess Weldeck has written a book about the place - we don't know who she is, but the name tells you something about the clientele. A blend of classic (read frumpy - chandeliers and white puffed cushions and odd-looking old-fashioned chairs) and art deco design, conjured up by designer Patrick Jouin.

188 guest rooms including 43 suites, overlooking avenue Montaigne, the Eiffel Tower or the hotel's courtyard. The Terrace Eiffel Suite has a roof-top terrace with a 360 degree view if you can't choose (and can afford not to). 550 staff. That's around three per room.

The Royale Suite is the largest suite in the whole of Paris: 450 square metres. It's a real harem: revolving plasma screens two Turkish baths (two? why two?), a jacuzzi and a cosmetic mini-bar, whatever that is, in the bathroom.

Here's our favourite: A special pillow-menu with choice of wheat, de-stressing, beautifying, horse hair, osteopathic or synthetic pillows. What's a wheat pillow? For if you get hungry in the night? And which is the best for pillow fights?

And our second favourite: "bespoke grooming for the well-being of your shoes, including a Berluti kit". Bargain.

And the food? Alain Ducasse is one of Paris's most famous chefs, and he's in charge of the restaurants at the Plaza Athénée. Expect frills, fiddles, strong tastes and bizarre combinations, and expect a no-vegetarians-allowed policy. The wine cellar has 35,000 bottles. Watch out for bits of chandelier dropping in your soup. Breakfast isn't included in the room rate and costs upwards of €60 ($95). Better be a damn good coffee and pain au chocolat.

We hear the service is fire-hot  in terms of efficiency but slightly cold in terms of friendliness....so let's just hope Amy didn't get into any fights while she was there.
