Hotel Maven Annie0007 who made the Oregon Hotel Trail easy for all of us to follow has taken a different path. This time she's summing up the Playa del Carmen Hotel Scene in Mexico. Enjoy.

We almost walked by the Kinbe hotel, but it was the pool water lapping up against the lobby window that got us to stop and peek inside. The pool is small, but simply put, amazing. From the lobby you walk across a tiny footbridge that leads you into a courtyard, and the pool runs the length, getting deeper and deeper, enough to accommodate a pretty fine cannonball.

It sits inside an interior courtyard with balconies that look out and up to the open air, and a four-story waterwall adds to the tropical ambiance.

Walk through the lobby to the other side -- a veritable garden of lush plants, sprawling palms and enormous elephant ears. Follow a flight of stairs up to the top, and take in another amazing view of Playa del Carmen and Cozumel away in the distance.

The hotel has undergone a massive renovation, leaving the garden side with the "old rooms" and the pool-view side with the newer chambers. As with all "Chillmex" hotels, the Kinbe is that unique blend of Mediterraneo and Mexico -- natural elements incorporated with clean lines, tropical hues, religious icons and jazzy artwork.

This place has all the chic pizzazz of The Mosquitos, the Deseo and The Basico (it also offers comp passes to Mamita's Beach Club), but it's far less stuffy. It's not about being seen, but about truly chilling out, falling out of bed and wandering about twenty paces down to the playa. Kinbe is practically a hideout.
