British hotel chain Apex has five hotels across Britain, including the Apex City of London, three Apex hotels in Edinburgh and the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa in Dundee. As well as claiming to be the leading operator of 4-star hotels in the UK, they're also proud of their environmental record.
So proud, in fact, that they started a small blog about it called Jo Blogs, named after their environmental director, Jo Harbisher. To date, the blog entries are fairly few and far between, a criticism we level at plenty of hotel blogs. But they do report about some important results like a series of environmental awards that the Apex Hotel group has won of late.
What caught our attention more is the blog's list of green tips for staying in hotels. Amongst the usual suspects like re-using your towels and recycling bottles, they had a couple of other tips to give. For example, they suggest opening the window to cool down instead of using the air conditioner, something we applaud, because we're often so annoyed that so many hotels have windows that don't open at all.
And on the issue of toiletries, here's their philosophy: if you leave half-used bottles of shampoo or shower gel behind, they'll donate them to a local charity. The same applies for unused soap. Certainly a different way to deal with the problem.
