If you think city-based hotels aimed at businessmen are bad for WiFi, imagine what the e-situation's like in a beach hotel aimed at sunbathers. One of our most frustrating WiFi experiences was at the beach-side Sofitel Thalassa in Corsica.

We can't remember the exact details, but it involved several different codes on printed-out bits of paper, a lot of money, a lot of time, a lot of frustration, and some rather childish logging on, logging off, logging on, logging off in an attempt to save pennies.

Okay, so what does a girl need WiFi for when she's at a beach hotel? How sad is that? Yes, we know....but we were actually there to work, not to sunbathe. And that's exactly the line the staff took - why do you care? Why do you need internet anyway? In the end we gave up. Maybe they were right. It is pretty sad.

This was last July, so maybe the Sofitel techno people have sorted themselves out by now. Maybe they've also banged up a new wind turbine - we hear that Sofitel are going green.

So the Sofitel Thalassa might be a late contender for the Worst WiFi hotels 2007 list, but it makes up for it with its spa - a whole separate building full of beautiful women offering massages and detox programmes.

The Sofitel's right on a craggy point sticking out of the west coast of Corsica, a few miles down from the capital Ajaccio. All you can see around you is either blue sea or rocks. If you don't fancy the spa, there's a private beach instead, and you can hire water-skidoos and all that jazz from the staff. So if you're heading here, do as the locals do - leave the laptop at home and take your swimming trunks instead.
