Tornado Damages Atlanta's Westin and Omni Hotels

March 17, 2008 at 9:00 AM | by juliana | 1 Comment

A tornado roared through downtown Atlanta on Friday night, damaging the city's convention center, the Georgia Dome (which was hosting the SEC basketball tournament) and Centennial Olympic Park. The storms left two people dead and caused about $150 million in damage to city buildings.

On the hotel front, when such a large convention center is damaged, adjacent hotels dependent on the center's business suffer as well.

One such hotel was the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel which had about 100 windows blown out.

Walls said that guests were relocated in the hotel or to another hotel after the storm, but that there were no injuries. The hotel's glass elevator, located on the outside of the building, was also damaged.

Yet another hotel got hit much worse. The Omni Hotel at CNN Center had about 467 of its 1,067 rooms damaged by the tornado (above). The hotel has downsized to 50 percent of its normal capacity while the Westin remains fully functional.

Tornado Damages Atlanta's Westin and Omni Hotels

Hello from Atlanta. I work with Edelman public relations, and we represent the Omni Hotel at CNN Center.

The storm recovery in Atlanta is moving quickly, and the Omni Hotel at CNN Center is working to repair damage sustained by the tornado. We thought the following information released today may be of interest:

The Omni Hotel at CNN Center today affirms that the property remains open for business after a tornado touched down in Atlanta on March 14.

Hotel management expects the property to be fully functional by early April.
Although The Omni Hotel lost the use of 467 rooms in its South Tower when the tornado struck, the property is currently hosting a group of 400 guests in the North Tower for this week's U.S. Department of Energy conference.

Prime Meridian Restaurant, Latitudes Bistro & Lounge and guest room dining are also operational and available for guests to enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Safety engineers completed a thorough visual inspection and have deemed the building safe and secure, according to Michael Sullivan, director of marketing for Omni Hotel at CNN Center.

The hotel currently has high occupancy in guest rooms and event space in the North Tower. All rooms are expected to be fully functional by the beginning of April once the window repairs are completed in the South Tower.

Hotel management relocated guests staying in the South Tower to other areas of the city immediately following the storm and sent smaller groups to the Westin, a partner hotel through the Omni-led Convention Collection at Centennial Olympic Park (CCCOP), an organization that acts as a "one-stop shop" option for meeting planners, providing a single point of contact for hotel, meeting space, transportation, and other needs for staging a successful downtown Atlanta event.

The Westin knows the Omni system due to the  partnership through the CCCOP and honored the existing agreements for groups which we relocated to their property. The hotels work well together.

The City of Atlanta removed debris surrounding the hotel and city transportation, including MARTA and taxis, are properly operating and can provide transportation to and from the Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The hotel's valet and guest parking is also available from the North Tower.

If there are any questions about the Omni Hotel and its recovery, we'd be happy to help with answers.
