There is nothing kitschier than a product based on cultural clichés. Bad examples that come to mind are Olive Garden, with its proliferation of brick and Mediterranean pottery; or the façade of any Taco Bell, with its phony Mexican architecture.

Luckily, Seville's Hotel Inglaterra--which means England in Spanish--doesn't fall into this category. Sure there are lots of mahogany and flower prints to be found throughout this 151-year-old, 86-room hotel, but it also manages an air of authenticity, mostly thanks to the adjoining Trinity Pub, where we recently stopped in for a drink one afternoon.

What drew us in were the dusty and decades-old Guinness bottles and, oddly, typewriters in the window, leading us at first to believe the place was an antique shop. Instead we walked into a small, rectangular bar (made of mahogany, of course), with plenty of partitioned seating, a rare find these days for those who like a little privacy with their pint.

The place is said to be hot spot at night, but we found the afternoon preferable. Having a drink that late in the day--and on a Sunday no less!--we got the sense the few quiet patrons scattered throughout the bar were trying to hide from the day, even though the sun continues to stream through the bar's stained-glass windows.

Rates here start at 134 euros (about $207) per night for a twin room. Hotel Inglaterra is near the tourist attractions of Plaza Nueva and Seville Town Hall, but is still off-the-winding-path.
