For those in search of a big serving of kitsch and a dash of a Hollywood theme, go no further than the Chelsea Pines Inn in New York. The Chelsea Pines has been around for a while--with a quirky reputation that kept it in business--and more recently it's had some refurbishments going to make it a bit fresher and more enticing.
The NY Times published a review over the weekend that was really quite flattering and does make us keen to check in too.
While most of the rooms are pretty cramped, it sounds like the decorations--and especially the proliferation of old Hollywood posters--makes people, including the NYT reviewer, forget about size. Same can be said for the bathrooms, which are pretty tight, but newly revamped, which seems to make them acceptable.
There are all kinds of interesting rooms to stay in, devoted to particular stars: Susan Hayward, Albert Finney, Tony Curtis and Debbie Reynolds, and the list goes on. The staff are helpful and although there's no room service, they serve a continental breakfast downstairs, and coffee and tea is available in the same area 24 hours a day.
It seems like a hotel that's not for luxury or relaxing, but to enjoy the quirks themselves.
