The plan is for 245 rooms (52 in the old section, the rest in a new extension), two restaurants, two bars, health center, ballroom, heaps of function rooms and meeting rooms...and the rest. Originally scheduled for a 2009 opening, the latest news from the Marriott is that it won't be ready until 2010.
As it's located right next to the Eurostar terminal and the busy King's Cross station we guess the weekday clientele will be mainly business travelers. But with any luck, it'll fill with romantics at the weekends.
It's sweet to know that the building used to house a hotel back in 1876. The Midland Grand Hotel was one of the most opulent hotels in London. Think gold-leaf wallpaper, a fireplace in every room, and an in-house orchestra. No ensuite bathrooms but plenty of servants to keep your chamber pot cleaned and emptied. It charged 14 shillings (just over a dollar) a night, which was a fortune back then.
We're not sure Marriott will be able to match the Midland Grand's pure extravagance, but we're looking forward to see it try.
