Putting The Hard Day's Night Hotel into Context

Last week HotelChatter reported the opening of the long-awaited (oft-delayed) Hard Day's Night hotel in Liverpool, a Beatles-themed extravaganza of a hotel experience.

We haven't stayed there so we won't pretend we have, unlike the writers of the bizarre mixture of faux-reviews that search engines come up with. Anything from "clever touches of decadence throughout, as well as exclusive works of art by the famous Beatles artist Shannon" to The Times newspaper's damning remark that Shannon's work is "mediocre."

But we can put the hotel in context.

The Beatles
Please note that the world has gone mad. NASA has announced that, to mark their 50th anniversary, they beamd the Beatles song 'Across the Universe' into space on Monday (Feb 3rd). Specifically, it will be aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light-years from Earth.

When Paul McCartney found out he said "Send my love to the aliens," while John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, said: "I see this as the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the Universe."

We thought it was just Liverpool that had gone Beatles-mad until we found out the NASA story. Liverpool's airport is even named after John Lennon. You can buy Beatles-themed fridge magnets at the checkouts of supermarkets. The city's just mounted yet another Beatles exhibition with the rather unoriginal title 'Another Hard Day's Night.'

An anonymous buyer paid £24,000 ($47,200) in December for a lock of John Lennon's hair that a forward-thinking hairdresser had nabbed up and kept hold of until now and his glasses were attracting bids of £750,000 ($1,476,000) earlier in the year.

Madness.

What to expect?
In a city where most of the population are infected by Beatle-madness, who knows what to expect of their most hyped hotel?

The name doesn't inspire much hope. A Hard Day's Night? Like calling your restaurant the 'Badly-Cooked Meal' or the 'Over-Salted Soup Kitchen'. Could be worse. They could have called it 'Help!' or 'Please, Please, Please' or, more frighteningly, 'Rubber Soul'. But they could have called it 'Golden Slumbers' or 'Good Night' or even 'Good Morning Good Morning.' Better still, 'Hold Me Tight'.

Truth is, no-one knows what to expect. Least of all the single enthusiastic reviewer (is he genuine, I wonder?) on TripAdvisor:

"Top quality fixtures and fittings and even an electronic do not disturb sign by the bed! I'm well travelled but this is something I have never seen before."

We wonder why on earth not.

    Re: Liverpudlian

Just like the 'fake' reviewers who have probably not yet been to the Hard Day's Night hotel, I also suspect that the author of this 'article' has never set foot in Liverpool.
There is no such word as Liverpoolian, it's Liverpudlian. There is also no such football team as Liverpool United (thank God). I could go on (and on and on) pointing out inaccuracies (well googled on the lobscouse, by the way ;) ), but frankly I can't be bothered.

This 'review' should be treated as no more than this web-site purports itself to be - idle 'chatter'.
I just hope that whoever wrote it wasn't paid to do so.....

Re: Putting The Hard Day's Night Hotel into Liverp

ok so i wrote the title and i liked liverpoolian better even though the correct term is liverpudlian. i was trying to go for humor but you missed it.

anyways, i can vouch for Monica Guy's credibility but i'm sure she will tell you herself.

    Re: Liverpool

Monica Simon may be credible but this offensive piece of writing certainly is not. The hotel she didn't review after not visiting it is not the problem, her inappropriate diatribe against the city of Liverpool certainly is. There is little point outlining the cultural attractions and history of the city to her, nor is there any real point arguing with her personal feelings towards a city she has plainly never visited.....however she does need to understand just how offensive her comments about the 'good sense to bomb the guts out of Liverpool during World War II' are. Many, many people died during the Blitz in Liverpool and the city is only now recovering from the economic and physical devastation which was a direct result of WW2.

This is a website dedicated to reviewing hotels, often with the tongue firmly in the cheek, maybe Monica should actually visit one and restrict comments to her actual experience.

Juliana - frankly I didn't miss the humour. There is no humour in any part of the article. Inaccurate - yes. Offensive - yes. Humorous - not in the slightest, unless you have a very sick sense of humour.

Re: Putting The Hard Day's Night Hotel into Contex

    Whoa....

First off, I'm sorry to have offended anyone. Look! Deleted. The last thing HotelChatter wants to do is offend patriotic (for lack of a better word) sensibilities.

Second, my only defence is having spent a couple of days in Liverpool a couple of years ago. My strongest memory is of one guy peeing unconcernedly on the corner of a street while another guy beat the brains out of yet another guy two feet away. But I apologise for having used that nasty experience to colour my whole picture of the city.

In case readers are worried, I'm not a 'fake reviewer...I travel a lot for other reasons and have either stayed at or visited all the hotels I review. Occasionally I rely on friends for recommendations, but I always say so.

Why don't you write to Juliana explaining what is so good about Liverpool these days? I'm sure she'll publish it. It may not persuade me to visit the Hard Day's Night hotel or even improve my sense of humour, but it'll help the rest of the world know what they're missing.

    Look forward to reading it...

The 'nasty experience' you describe could have happened in any English city (or town for that matter), on any given evening (Ever been to London/Bristol/Cheltenham/Leeds/Manchester/Newcastle?). It's quite sad that you allowed the moronic minority to colour your judgement and wrote such a hateful piece of 'journalism' as a result. The fact that your editors (I presume there are some?) chose to publish it makes it even worse.

Hey Lill, chill out.  Monica revised the story and apologized.  You are the one coming across "nasty" and "hateful" now.

Markj - I'm not un-chilled, but thanks for your concern ;).
As for my comments, please re-read them, I think you'll find there's absolutely nothing "nasty" or "hateful" in them.

i agree with monica. i think Lill should tell us what he/she loves about Liverpool and why people should visit and where people should stay. Lill--do you recommend the Hard Day's Night Hotel? Whatever you think, we would certainly love insider info from someone who has spent considerable time in Liverpool.

Re: Putting The Hard Day's Night Hotel into Contex

Yes - thanks for standing up for me Mark and Juliana, but it's true that I shouldn't have written something offensive about a city on the basis of one bad experience. As I say, I apologise.

But we'd really like to hear more about Liverpool, especially since it seems to be hitting the news more often as European Capital of Culture. Can you give readers a reason to visit (if not a reason to stay at the Hard Day's Night)?

Judging from these recent photos that we got of the interior of the Hard Days Night Hotel, the place looks very cool. I would totally go there. Check 'em out!
